Hotel Suburbia is delighted to host an evening with two fantastic artists from Austria and France. Mia Zabelka and Philippe Petit will pay the Vrijplaats Leiden a visit.
Mia Zabelka is a lady with luggage. She studied violin and electro-acoustic music at the Vienna Conservatory and also studied musicology and journalism at the University of Vienna. Then followed a long period of time with concerts in Europe, the US and the former Soviet Union. She was in residence at the “Art-Station Sankt Peter” in Cologne, worked at the studio for electronic music at the ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe, resided at Steim Amsterdam and at the Experimental Studio of Warsaw Radio. Between 1995-2000 she was artistic director of St Pölten Klangturm.. In 2007 she founded Klanghaus Untergreith, an international centre for sound-art and a “Forum for creative development” in her home-town Untergreith.
After that she delved into the interdisciplinary improvisation techniques with a combination of art, new media and literature in which she “explores the relationship between body, gestures, sound and space.” About this she noted:
“In my solo work, I use both acoustic and electric violin in combination with electronic devices to create two different musical languages or soundworlds. In that I developed an improvisational technique of “automatic playing” where I let the acoustic violin respond to the movements and gestures of my body. In other words, the spontaneous physical movements of my body are converted into sound. The acoustic violin is particularly sensitive to the slightest nuances that arise from these movements and gestures. I also developed access to this form of improvisation in the use of my voice. ”
I met her for the first time at Störung Festival 2013 in Barcelona, where I wrote the following about her performance:
“Mia Zabelka does what appear to be two improvised pieces. Possibly her soft side and her hard side. She opens with vocals and creates several rhythms which she takes over with what can best be described as pizzicato rock violin and slowly transcends into open drones with chorused delays and reverbs. The hard side comes up when the violin goes into distorted mode and Mia swirls into a hefty violin noise wall. Never too long, just about not to loud and finally plunges into silence. A very captive performance by Mia who does not make life easy on herself with the large array of equipment.”
A phenomenon in the Austrian music and art world. Also to enjoy on Incubate 2015 later this year.

Philippe Petit
“I am not a musician and even if I create some original music I’d rather be introduced as a “musical travel agent” than a composer”
Like we say in dutch: Le bon vin n’a pas besoin de couronne
What is left to tell you about the musical centipede Philippe Petit: a musical-travel-agent. He has an extensive oeuvre and also worked with many artists like Murcof, Audrey Chen and Lydia Lunch, released work on labels like Sub Rosa, MonoType, Important Records and the likes. He runs two labels called Pandemonium Records and BiP_HOp. A blogger and a journalist for various magazines/radios since 1983, as well as a musical activist. On his website he states:
“To compose musics I use various instruments or devices, though most notably an Electric Psalterion + Hackbrett Cymbalum + Caterpillar, Drum Guitars built by Yuri Landman + turntables as well as a computer and synths to build up electronic layers, process acoustic and field recordings. On top of those, I like to move various glasses, pieces of wood, stones, or percussive objects, as well as taking advantage of vinyl material to fondle released sounds.
