Terwijl eind jaren 60 de hippies op Woodstock droomden van een betere vredelievende wereld werd een groot deel van de bevolking nog steeds niet als gelijkwaardig erkend. De strijd van Martin Luther King, Stokely Carmichael, Rosa Parks, Angela Davis en vele andere tegen dit onrecht zorgde voor een groter zelfbewustzijn en een verandering van de muziek. James Brown verwoorde dit gevoel met “I’m Black and I’m Proud”.

Soul muziek was tot dat moment tekstueel vaak niet meer dan een combinatie van liefde, lust , jaloezie en, terug grijpend naar de Gospel roots, liefde voor God.  Maar dit werd een metafoor voor de verhouding van de individu ten opzichte van de maatschappij en konden ook politieke en sociale onderwerpen zoals de oorlog in Vietnam, ghetto vorming en drugs gebruik deel van de muzikale ammunitie. Beïnvloed door Jimi Hendrix en Sly & The Family Stone ontstond een nieuw soort Soul dat elementen uit psychedelische rock, jazz en funk gebruikte om een passende soundtrack  bij deze nieuwe tijd te creëren. Ondanks als deze veranderingen bleef Soul muziek bovenal muziek waarop gedanst kon worden en waarbij je de wereld om je heen even kon vergeten.

Deze avond kan er in de Vrijplaats volop gedanst worden op deze Deep- en  Psychedelic Soul muziek uit de late 60’s en vroege 70’s.

In the late 60’s while the hippies were dreaming of world peace at Woodstock a majority of Americans was still considered to be less then equal. The Reverend Martin Luther King, Stokely Carmichael, Rosa Parks, Angela Davis and many others fought this injustice and caused a greater self awareness and a change in music. James Brown condensed this feeling to “I’m Black and I’m Proud”.

Soul music, until that time, had lyrically been a combination of stories of love, lust, jealousy and, in keeping with its Gospel roots, a love for God. These lyrics became a metaphor for the relationship between the individual and society on a whole and soon political and social topics such as the war in Vietnam, live in slums and ghetto’s and drug abuse became part of the repertoire. Influenced by Jimi Hendrix and Sly & The Family Stone a new kind of Soul music arose that used elements from psychedelic rock, jazz and funk to create an appropriate soundtrack to these times. Despite all these alterations Soul music, first and foremost, remained  music to dance to and to help you forget the world around you for just a moment.
