When the Road Bends… Tales of a Gypsy Caravan is a 2006 music film/documentary about the Gypsy Carvan tour that brought five different bands together for a North American tour, initiated by the World Music Institute to show something of the Romani music roots — originating in India, spreading west until reaching Eastern Europe and then finally Western Europe.
The “Gypsy Caravan” tour extravaganza features performances by Macedonian diva and “Queen of the Gypsies” ESMA REDZEPOVA, traditional Indian folk troupe MAHARAJA, Romanian FANFARE CIOCARLIA, the violin wizardry of Romanian group TARAF DE HAIDOUKS and the ANTONIO EL PIPA FLAMENCO ENSEMBLE.
The sounds of Roma (Gypsy), a culture interminably misunderstood, oppressed and stigmatized, are increasingly heard on the dance floor, and have attracted fans like Johnny Depp, who is in the film.
This film brings you the artists’ performances on stage, their lives on tour and at home in India, Macedonia, Romania and Spain as well as interviews about the Roma culture and the social stigma attached to it.
