Wings & Roots -shaping identity between cultures-

“If you are a citizen of the world, you are a citizen of nowhere. You don’t understand what the very word ‘citizenship’ means” Theresa May proclaimed in 2016. What does that mean for people who live and work between cultures, in a world where ‘politics of belonging’ are promoted by nationalist politicians? In the documentary-concert Wings & Roots, we discover the hidden implications of existing-between-worlds on life and identity.
In a globalized world ever more people relate to different countries and cultures but never fully belong. They are becoming part of what is called the Third Culture. This is the case for Shishani Vranckx, John Farah, Bodek Janke and Andrea Voets: four musicians that carry twelve countries within them. In the documentary-concert Wings & Roots they are guided by transcultural psychiatrist Glenn Helberg in the process of piecing it all together. Their conversations on film resonate through live music.
About Wings & Roots:
Wings & Roots is a documentary-concert by Andrea Voets. As the artistic director Resonate Productions – musical journalism, she creates ‘musical journalism’. The aim is to uncover emotional blind spots in society. She created this program as a new maker at De Balie, funded by the Fonds Podiumkunsten. Company New Heroes provided artistic guidance. Videos are made by You’re just zealous.
This evening, we will watch the film of the performance, followed by a guided conversation on the Third Culture with Andrea Voets.

“If you are a citizen of the world, you are a citizen of nowhere. You don’t understand what the very word ‘citizenship’ means,” verkondigde Theresa May tijdens de Tory party conference in 2016. Wat betekenen dit soort uitspraken voor mensen waarvan hun leven en werk zich tussen twee culturen afspeelt? Hoe geven zij hun leven vorm in een wereld waar identiteitspolitiek wordt gepromoot door nationale politici? In het documentaire-concert Wings & Roots ontdekken we de verborgen implicaties van een bestaan tussen culturen op leven en identiteit.
In een geglobaliseerde wereld is het aantal mensen dat zich identificeert met verschillende landen, maar nooit ergens helemaal bij hoort, hoger dan ooit. Zij zijn deel van wat we ook wel de ‘Third Culture’ noemen. Dit geldt ook voor Shishani Vranckx, John Farah, Bodek Janke en Andrea Voets: vier muzikanten die tezamen twaalf landen met zich meedragen. In Wings & Roots gaan de muzikanten in gesprek met transcultureel psychiater Glenn Helberg, om van alle stukjes van de puzzel één geheel te maken. De gesprekken in de documentaire resoneren met hun eigen live muziek.

Wings & Roots is een documentaire-concert gemaakt door Andrea Voets. Voets creëert ‘musical journalism’ als artistiek directeur van Resonate Productions – musical journalism en heeft als doel het blootleggen van emotionele blinde vlekken in de samenleving. Ze creëerde Wings & Roots als nieuwe maker bij De Balie in Amsterdam. Company New Heroes zorgde voor artistieke begeleiding. De video’s zijn gemaakt door You’re just Zealous.
